VO: UK is ready to support postgraduate study to Lao candidates under the Chevening scholarships for 2016/2017
INTRO: UK Government has been continuously contributing to the Lao education by providing study-abroad opportunity under the Chevening scholarship, which is now opened for applications for 2016/2017 round. According to the Ambassador, David Hugh Evans, the scholarship aims at supporting Lao future leaders to gain top-class education to contribute to the Lao socio-economic development. STORY British Ambassador, David Hugh Evans spoke to our news team that the UK Government has been providing Chevening scholarships to potential future leaders around the world who demonstrate talent, ambition and passion to pursue their post-graduate study in the UK universities in priority fields and return with knowledge and experience to contribute to their country’s socio-economic development, especially addressing important issues and meeting demands of Lao intellectual labors upon integrating into ASEAN Community

Ambassador also said adding that, the scholars will be able to academically benefit themselves and experience cultural aspects the UK has to offer as well as enjoy a chance to share Lao culture and traditions to the UK including their respective scholarship fellows from other countries.

Onida Vinavong, a Chevening 2012-2013 alumni shares with us that the program provided her with economic knowledge which she later applied at her work with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. Apart from study, Onida was able to establish firm connections with scholars from various parts of the world who allowed her to experience diverse culture.

Chevening is the UK government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders. Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and partner organisations, it operates in 144 countries worldwide awarding scholarships to exceptional individuals with leadership potential.
The programme offers a unique opportunity for awardees to build a global network of continuing professional significance, enabling talented individuals to establish social, cultural, academic or commercial partnerships with the UK.
The Chevening programme has operated in Laos for nearly 20 years and there are currently around 25 Lao Chevening alumni, working in a range of leadership positions in their chosen field.
There are thirteen Chevening scholarships available for Laos in 2016/2017, covering the following priority areas:
• Law and Governance
• Civil society
• International Trade, Business and Economics; and Finance and Banking
• Climate change
• Science and Innovation.
