VO ADB supports US million(170.8 billion kip) loan to help small-scale livestock farmers
INTRO: The Asian Development bank or ADB has approved a US million about 170.8 billion kip loan to help small-scale livestock farmers to commercialise their operations so Laos can meet the rising domestic and external demand for quality meat products.
STORY: Deputy Minister of Finance Ms Thipphakone Chanthavongsa yesterday signed the loan agreement on behalf of the Lao government with ADB Country Director to Laos Ms Sandra Nicoll. The funds would also be used to make the industry more human, safe and environmentally sustainable.
The Northern Smallholder Livestock Commercialisation Project will be carried out in 12 districts in the four northern provinces of Huaphan, Luang Namtha, Luang Prabang and Xieng Khuang
Activities will include training for smallholder livestock production and marketing groups, traders, butchers and other stakeholders to improve livestock rearing and humane handling, meat quality, sanitation and food safety standards.
This project will build on the achievements of the recently completed Northern Region Sustainable Livelihoods through Livestock Development Project, which was co-financed by the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, and ADB.
