Greece’s new finance minister who is on a tour of European capitals says he wants to reach a new agreement with international creditors by the end of May. Yanis Varoufakis has so far won French support for Athens’ efforts to renegotiate its bailout terms.
Varoufakis also noted that Athens will not ask for any more loans until a new deal is reached. He was speaking after a meeting with his French counterpart Michel Sapin in Paris. The French minister offered support for a new payback timeframe or terms. But he insisted that Paris won’t support canceling the debt. The Greek finance minister is to travel to London and Rome for more talks on Athens’ bailout. Greece’s new anti-austerity government has pledged to write off half the 315 billion euro debt.
